La trempe de l'acier permet de le rendre plus dure. Il faut chauffer le métal à une température ou le carbone se dissout dans la matière, puis de le refroidir rapidement pour garder cette structure à la température ambiante.
A l'inverse de la trempe de l'acier il y a le recuit. Le recuit est utiliser pour enlever les tensions interne du métal.
Si on a forgé une lame il y a des tensions internes très importantes dans le métal, si cette lame était trempé directement elle gondolerait ou se casserait. La lame devra être recuite (une ou plusieurs fois) avant d'être trempée.
Recuire un acier consiste à le chauffer au environ de 900° C et de le faire refroidir très lentement (entre 12 et 24 heures).
Un mécanicien ou un bricoleur a souvent une caisse à outils je n'en ai jamais vu pour les marteau de géologue... exemple le "Paléo Pick" fait 65 cm de longueur.
