Formerly Saint-Genis-Pouilly was called Pouilly-Saint-Genis (or Saint-Genix). It was in 1887 that the definitive appellation, Saint-Genis-Pouilly, appeared in the registers of the Civil Status.

Pouilly, Roman city
Pouilly comes from the Latin "Appoliacum" and it is probable that, under Roman occupation,
the village temple was dedicated to Apollo!

Judging by the many traces of ancient remains that have been discovered there,
Saint-Genis-Pouilly appears to have been the seat of an important Roman colony.

While searching the cemetery which surrounds the old church, we discovered vaults and coffins.
containing medals, gold chains and coins which the Geneva museum acquired.

The Middle Age
In the 15th century, the hamlet of Pouilly experienced an era of prosperity. Vast land had been given by the Counts of Savoy to the Benedictines who cleaned up the marshy region, brought it into cultivation and built an abbey house.
Certain vestiges of the communication routes of the time attest to the immensity of this abbey.

The Bernese raze the city
Pouilly-Saint-Genix then welcomed many foreigners who came to seek asylum and find work. Over the years, the town grew rapidly and became large enough to take the name of town: as such, it enjoyed many privileges.

Such was the prosperous state of Pouilly-Saint-Genix when the Bernese invaded the country in 1536. The city, the monastery and the hamlets which depended on it were ransacked, burned, razed. Only the church that the Bernese had transformed into a store remained standing.

In the 17th century
Around 1666, the 300 or so inhabitants lived in a very simple way: from vines, a little wheat, hemp. They had to maintain "three stone bridges, three wooden bridges and two planks", thrown over the rivers Lion and Allondon.
These bridges were more of a burden than a profit since only a few mules, loaded with goods and coming from Lyon to reach Switzerland, used them. The product of the toll was therefore very meager.

An open city
Over time, Saint-Genis grew in importance. Its royal post office (next to the current chapel) made the town grow and Pouilly-Saint-Genix became Saint-Genis-Pouilly!
